Whether you have your own clay oven, or just want to transfer your freshly prepared pizza onto a warmed baking tray or pizza stone in a conventional oven, having a decent pizza peel is an absolute kitchen essential.

We think that these are the best pizza peels on the market

What is a pizza peel?

There are two types of pizza peel – the metal and the wooden.

The wooden pizza peel is popular for the home-made pizza chef, because you build the entire pizza directly onto the peel.

The more traditional method, however, is to build the pizza on a cold surface (such as a marble worktop) and to use a thinner, metal peel to slide the pizza off the surface and into the oven.

Your kitchen may very well be the deciding factor when making a decision between a wooden and a metal peel. If you have a cool granite or marble surface, you might want to use the metal peel method. If, however, your kitchen surfaces are standard laminate or wooden, then a wooden peel might suit you better.

What should I consider before choosing my best pizza peel?

Wooden peels are much thicker than metal peels. Both are great for sliding the pizza into the oven, but a thinner peel with a blade-like edge (such as a metal peel) makes it easier to remove the cooked pizza from the oven.

Wooden peels have a tapered edge that helps you peel the cooked pizza off the stone. You might need to employ some additional tongs to help with wooden peels.

Wooden peels require dusting with flour to prevent the dough from sticking. Condensation can develop on a metal peel if the dough is warm and the peel blade is cool, which will make it stick.

If you’re using a proper pizza oven with a clay bottom, a metal peel is less likely to grind and erode at the blade edge. If the edge of a wooden peel becomes jagged, there’s the possibility that wood splinters can stick into the pizza skin, which isn’t at all desirable. However, if you’re using a pizza stone and tongs to help remove the cooked pizza from the oven, this can be avoided.

Wooden peels are prone to surface scratches from knives and pizza cutters, presenting potential health issues unless cleaned thoroughly after each use.

Metal pizza peels are usually dishwasher safe, whilst wooden items often aren’t.

How to use a pizza peel

If you’re using a wooden peel, you’ll build your pizza on the floured surface of the peel. After mixing and stretching your dough, you’ll mold it into the required shape.

Watch the video below to know more about the methods to use a pizza peel.

Once prepared, you transfer the pizza into a preheated oven by shaking the peel with a determined shunt towards the stone. If the peel has been sufficiently floured, the pizza dough and the topping should slide directly onto the pizza stone.

These are our choices for the Best Pizza Peel

1. Ethically Sourced Premium Natural Bamboo Pizza Peel

Pizza Royale Ethically Sourced Premium Natural Bamboo Pizza Peel, 19.6 Inch x 12 Inch

The Pizza Royale is an excellent peel, which doubles as a cutting- and serving-board for your pizza, or as an attractive serving block for cheese.

This sturdy paddle is light enough to hold, even when topped with a pizza. The peel has an easy-grip handle with a broad end that prevents it from slipping out of your hands when sliding the pizza into the oven.

This peel is made from ethically sourced bamboo, which has naturally occurring anti-bacterial properties. The surface is tough and more resistant to knife grooves than wood, so this is a great option if you’re concerned about the potential hazards of wooden kitchenware. If you’re looking for a great pizza cutter, there’s a good selection here.

Bamboo is less likely to splinter than wood and well known for its strength and durability, whilst remaining light-weight. If you give this peel the care it deserves, it won’t split, warp or crack and will give you many years of faithful service.

The tapered edge makes sliding your pizza into the oven a breeze. Removing from the oven may require a pair of tongs to assist.

This acacia wood peel is formed from laminated strips of attractive acacia bark, making it a beautiful, natural addition to your kitchen, ideal for hanging on the wall.

The tapered edge helps you to slide your pizza or flatbread off the paddle and onto your pizza stone, with a suitably tapered angle for reapplying the cooked product back onto the peel to remove after cooking.

The surface of the peel has been sanded and crafted to last a lifetime – but, of course, as with all wooden surfaces, it can be damaged by direct knife or cutter contact, so care is required when cutting your pizza. You can oil the board with a butcher’s block oil to keep it in good condition.

At 22″ wide, this is perfect for the larger pizza and is one of the larger peels featured in this article.

Whilst the Heritage Acacia Wood Pizza Peel doubles up as an attractive serving board, it’s recommended that you avoid cutting your pizza directly on the surface.

This aluminum pizza peel comes in three sizes – 12″ W, 14″ W and 16″ W. The plate base has rounded corners, which help to peel the cooked pizza off the stone or the surface of the oven.

The 8″ wooden handle keeps the surface temperature of the paddle low enough to hold when reaching into hot ovens.

The thin surface and sharp edge of this peel make it ideal for removing a cooked pizza from the stone or the rough clay surface of a pizza oven, ready to be transferred to a serving board or directly to the plate. Because there are no problems with splintering, it’s possible to cut the pizza directly on the peel.

Users of this product have commented that you can remove the pizza easily from the oven without the need for coaxing with tongs and a spatula.

The edges of the blade are reasonably sharp, so care is recommended when handling and washing the peel.

This thin, metal pizza peel slips easily underneath your cooked pizza when removing it from the oven.

The stainless steel surface is more fire-proof than a wooden paddle – if your pizza stone is on a barbecue, the peel won’t be damaged by contact with the flames. And being stainless steel, this item is completely dishwasher safe.

The thin design of this peel makes it a great all-around baking item – ideal for lifting cakes, pies and tarts from the oven.

When extended, the handle makes the entire peel 22” long which is perfect for keeping your hands away from the heat, preventing potential burns. The handle has a comfort-style rubber grip which resists heat and ensures a firm grip can be maintained whilst transferring hot items to and from the oven.

The folding handle makes storage much easier than with a conventional fixed-handle peel. The folded unit is just 13” long, so it will easily fit alongside your pots and pans in the cupboard.

The peel’s paddle section is 13″ long and 9.5″ wide. This could be a little small for some, limiting the diameter of the pizza it can hold.

It’s recommended to coat this board with a butcher’s block oil at least an hour before use to ensure the longevity of the surface. The peel comes with a grommet for a wall hanging, providing flexible storage.
